If time is not a problem, the long sea crossings operated by Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth to Bilbao or from Plymouth to Santander in Spain offer very agreeable alternatives. There are usually two sailings a week in each direction. The pricing structure is highly variable, depending on the time of year. One advantage of this alternative is that the drive to Bagnères is relatively short from either port, taking no more than about 4 – 5 hours by car on good motorways.
